Plant and Animal Life

Plant Life:
Syria has quite limited areas of natural vegetation. The non-arable areas are too dry to support extensive plant life, and most of the arable areas have been stripped of natural cover. Yew, Lime, and Fir, trees grow in the mountains. In the Euphrates Valley and the Oasis of Palmyra, Date palms are found. On the coast and the fertile inland regions, grains, olives, vines, apricot trees, oaks, and poplars are to be found. Citrus trees including Lemon and Orange trees grow along the coastal area as well as, some reed grasses, wild flowers, trees, and shrubs. In the Anti-Lebanon Mountains are forests of Aleppo pine and Syrian and valonia oak.

There are few forests to be found in Syria. The few that there are, exist in the mountains, especially in the coastal mountain ranges. The exploitation of most forests for wood and paper has not left much, however there has been influential encouragement from the government by planting trees to cultivate forests and by protecting them. The steppe is characterized by the absence of natural tree cover, except for some sparsely distributed hawthorns. For a brief time in the spring, the Syrian land is covered by a variety of different colors including flowers and grassy plants. However they wither away under the summer sun casting off their seeds into the dry ground.

Animals:
There is not much to be seen in the area of Animal wildlife in Syria. Wolves, hyenas, foxes, and jackals can still be found in few areas while wild boar can be seen roaming the forests in the mountains. Deer, Bears, Squirrels are rarely seen. Desert animals on the other hand, include the Gazelle, the Jerboa, Vipers, various Lizards, Chameleons and most frequently the Syrian Hamster (which was taken to the UK in the 1800s).

Wild birds in Syria include Eagles, Buzzards, and Falcons can be seen quite often in the mountains. While the Housefly, Mosquitoes, Sand flies, Grasshoppers, Locusts and Wasps are the insects that can be found the most in Syria. Bees are kept in few farms where honey is produced.

Syrian farmers use the mule as the beast of burden for their ancient farming methods and pulling carts in towns. The camel is used in the desert and is considered 'the ship of the desert'. A lot of wooly sheep and goats can be found grazing in the fields while other domesticated animals including horses, donkeys, cattle and chickens are also kept on farms.
