Afqa Springs
These springs, located in Palmyra, are situated directly in front of the Palmyra Cham Palace. The entrance to these springs is through a cave opening up to many passages that sometimes extend to 600 meters. Inside there are a few rooms that are thought to have been dressing rooms for bathing in the first century AD.
The springs however are said to have been used as far back as the Neolithic Age (Modern Stone Age) as mineral water baths as a from of healing. Some of the skeletons found prove this. The cave forms a kind of center of the exudation of the vaporizing mineral water, which has a temperature of 33 degrees centigrade.
Also found inside are writings that bear the date 162 AD, that are dedicated to the God Zefis (considered master of the Universe). The writings and dedication were made by the keeper of the springs whose name is Boldo Ibn
Zubeida.
Studies and analysis show that the hot water coming from the spring is rich with Sulfur, Chloride, Sodium, Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium, Nickel, Zinc and Lead. This water is medically approved to have therapeutic importance for the treatment of illnesses in the respiratory tract, the pulmonic tracheas, and for pains in the joints especially Arthritis and Rheumatism.
It is definitely worth a visit as it leaves both healthy and sick people with soft skin and a sense of comfort.
