The Euphrates Dam
Considered the largest earth fill Dam in the world the, Euphrates Dam (Sad Al Furat), was inaugurated by President Assad in 1993. This project built with Soviet aid in the 80's has done a lot for Syria. Through its hydroelectric generators it generates electricity for a large portion of Syria.
This Dam is filled with earth and strengthened by concrete walls, which are 60 meters high. It is 2500 meters long and starts off at 512 meters wide at the bottom to 19 meters in width at the top. On the left bank is an extension of 1500 meters long. Between the extension and the Dam is the spillway, a structure completely made out of concrete which is 250 meters wide.
The hydroelectric station can generate the power of one million kilowatts. The electricity is generated when the water passes through the Dam rotating 11 turbines. Because of the irregular water level, the electricity is also irregular and the northern regions would suffer from many power cuts in the eighties and early nineties.
The Assad lake or reservoir which is a result of the Dam, has helped irrigation and has reclaimed a total of 1,040,000 hectares in the area.
Al Thawra Town
